KOCHI: The High Court on Wednesday ordered to strictly charge no more than 5% GST on half-cooked packet Parotta. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh's order quashed the earlier order that imposed 18 per cent GST. This is on the petition of Edappally Modern Food Company. The government earlier remained adamant about charging an 18 per cent tax on the product sold by the petitioner. This was also upheld by the Dispute Resolution Appellate Authority.
Meanwhile, the petitioner argued in court that the Parotta comes under the bread category hence it should only be charged 5% GST as per existing norms. The company also stated that Parotta is baked from corn flour like bread. The High Court rejected the Government's contention that Parotta and Bread are two. The single bench held that Parotta and Chapathi were similarly prepared and reversed the government's decision to levy 18 per cent GST.
